Civil rights activist, Baptist minister and politician Jesse L Jackson announced his endorsement of Bernie Sanders on Sunday.

“The most progressive social and economic path gives us the best chance to catch up and Senator Bernie Sanders represents the most progressive path,” Reverand Jackson said in a statement.

“That’s why I choose to endorse him today.”

Jackson ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 1988, exceeding expectations, beating out candidates including Al Gore, Joe Biden and Dick Gephardt.

In Biden’s first campaign for the Democratic nomination, he told black voters to “reject” Jackson, causing a stir at the time.

Sanders supported Jackson’s candidacy in the late 1980s, and now Jackson is supporting Sanders’ candidacy in 2020.

Reverand Jackson will join Sanders at a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
