In a televised response to the Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night, Sanders predicted it would be the president’s last.
Speaking in front of media and a crowd of supporters in Manchester, New Hampshire, Sanders attacked Trump primarily over policy on healthcare, the economy, climate change and trade.
“Tonight, and on many other occasions, President Trump has told the American people that the economy today is booming, like it has never boomed before,” Sanders jokes.
“Well, in truth, for Trump and his billionaire friends, he is right.”
Sanders went onto highlight the growing economic inequality under Donald Trump, saying the president lied when he told the American people the wealthy would not benefit from his tax plan.
“Thanks to Trump, for the first time in the history of this country, billionaires now pay a lower effective tax rate than the average working person in this country.”
The Vermont Senator then went onto list promises the president made to working class voters that he has failed to keep, labelling Trump a liar.
Shifting his focus to the environment, Sanders asked the crowd, “how can a president of the United States give a State of the Union speech and not mention climate change?”
Sanders finished his address on a positive and unifying note, calling for an end to the divisiveness that Donald Trump is fomenting.
“We must bring our people together, black and white, Latino, Native American, Asian American, gay and straight, and create a government based on the principles of justice.”
“Let us go forward together,” he concluded.
