Presidential candidate Andrew Yang last night hinted his support for Bernie Sanders at a Bloomberg News roundtable, in what could be a major legup just days out from the Iowa caucuses.
The tech entrepreneur has engendered a small but enthusiastic and loyal following during the leadup to the primaries, and is currently polling an average small but not insignificant 3 percent in Iowa.
This means it is highly unlikely he will be viable in any precincts, meaning many of his supporters will then move on to other candidates, which could be crucial in a tight race.
Whilst he did not go so far as to explicitly endorse Sanders, he noted the overlap in values and ideals between his supporters and those of Sanders, saying “I think that Bernie and I do have a lot of overlap in support so it wouldn’t be surprising to me if many of our supporters head in that direction,” and suggesting that many of his supporters would go over to Sanders after the first round of voting.
The Iowa caucuses will be held on Monday 3 February.
