Bernie Sanders’ campaign has hit back at a negative ad aimed at the Senator, released Tuesday by the Biden campaign.

In the ad, Sanders is accused of lying about Joe Biden’s record on social security.

“Bernie’s campaign has unleashed a barrage of negative attacks on Joe Biden,” the ad’s narrator says.

Campaign manager for Bernie Sanders, Faiz Shakir, responded Tuesday evening, labelling the “negative ad” an “attack” on the Vermont Senator.

“Joe Biden just released the first negative ad of the 2020 Democratic primary, and let’s be clear about why: he’s trying to distort his decades-long record of proposing and voting for cuts to Social Security benefits for millions of people,” Shakir said in a statement.

“Joe Biden is no defender of Social Security, and a negative ad won’t help him outrun his record.”

Sanders’ campaign released a four-page document detailing Joe Biden’s record on social security, including his support of freezing social security and Medicare.

In a senate floor speech in 1995, Biden bragged about trying to cut social security. Sanders’ campaign posted a clip of Biden’s remarks on social media Tuesday night.

“When I argued that we should freeze Federal spending, I meant Social Security as well,” Biden said in the speech.

“I meant Medicare and Medicaid. I meant veterans benefits. I meant every single solitary thing in the Government. And I not only tried it once, I tried it twice, I tried it a third time, and I tried it a fourth time.”
