Actress and activist Jane Fonda announced her endorsement of Bernie Sanders at a climate change rally in Los Angeles on Friday.
“We have to get a climate president in office, and there’s only one right now, and that’s Bernie Sanders,” Fonda told the crowd, according to a USA Today report of the event.
“So, I’m indirectly saying I believe you have to support the climate candidate.”
In order to take on climate change, Fonda said she wants to see fossil fuel emissions cut by 50 percent over the next decade and fossil fuels be phased out over the next 30 years.
Sanders’ Green New Deals calls for domestic emissions to be reduced by 71 percent by 2030.
Fonda has been outspoken in her criticism of lawmakers for failing to address climate change. The actress has been arrested multiple times for protesting in the nation’s capital.
Representative Pramila Jayapal, who was an early endorser of Sanders’ candidacy, tweeted, “Jane Fonda adds her voice to the chorus of endorsers of Bernie Sanders and how we must address the climate crisis with bold change and policies like the Green New Deal.”
