Democratic primary candidate Tim Canova, who is challenging former DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has suffered a major cyber attack.
In a statement released by Canova’s campaign Saturday night, it was revealed the candidate’s website and online fundraising portal had been the target of an attack.
“We are continuing to investigate the issue, but there appears to have been a deliberate attack on the Canova campaign’s website and digital fundraising program,” said Mike Nellis, the campaign’s Digital Fundraising Manager.
“Beginning at roughly 10pm last night, we received a suspicious spike in new email signups on our campaign’s homepage to the tune of more than 120,000 new email addresses in less than 18 hours.”
The campaign said no data was compromised, and that the origin of the attack is unclear at this time. It also said it was remaining vigilant for further attacks, and is considering involving law enforcement in the matter.
Tim Canova, who is endorsed by and is a support of Bernie Sanders, will face incumbent Debbie Wasserman Schultz in the primary on August 30, 2016. Early voting has already begun in both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
